yang. it is monday, october 8th. that fall cold weather continues, and it's quite the wakeup call this monday. if you're thin skinned like me, you are suffering. i should have taken note and layered up like you did. >> layer up this morning. we're all feeling the change that came in this weekend. this is the coldest it's been in over five months around here. yeah, no joke out there. it's not like we're in the low 30s, but it's a big change from where we've been. right now temperatures around the area, mt. rainier at 43. burke at 41. 41 degrees in kensington and rockville and 43 degrees over in greenbelt. on the radar right now, storm team 4 radar, you can see a few little sprinkles around here just north of bluegrass in areas of west virginia, around leesburg, around luray. some moisture that's trying to get going. our best chance of showers will be around 11:00 a.m. to noontime as an area of low pressure

between cheverly and stadium armory. and because of the holiday, no vre or marc rail service today. mitt romney will deliver a major foreign policy speech in virginia. the republican presidential hopeful will speak at the institute in maryland today. the speech called the mantel of leadership is romney's tenth address on foreign policy. the former massachusetts governor links the deadly attack on the american consulate in benghazi last month to al qaeda, saying, "the attack on our consulate in benghazi on september 11th, 2012, was likely the work of the same forces that attacked our homeland on september 11th, 2001. these attacks were the deliberate work of terrorists." today president obama will wrap up his two-day fund-raising trip in california. yesterday he spoke at a fund-raising concert with performances by john bon jovi, stevie wonder, and katy perry. he poked a little fun at himself

and his recent debate performance. >> and everybody here is incredible professionals. they're such great friends, and they just perform flawlessly night after night. i can't always say the same. >> last night mr. obama also attended a $25,000 per person fund-raising dinner. tomorrow the president will hit the campaign trail in ohio. virginia's u.s. senate candidates will hold their second debate today. republican george allen and democrat tim kaine will square off in richmond. a recent nbc/wall street journal/marist poll shows kaine pulling ahead of allen 49-44%. david gregory moderated their first debate last month. today controversial ads will be popping up in some metro stations and on some metro buses. the ads equate muslim radicals to savages, and they'll be displayed at the georgia avenue,

petworth, "u" street, takoma, and glen mont stations. the american defense initiative created the ads, and metro didn't want to post them based on the violent response to the anti-islam video made in the u.s. a judge ruled on friday that metro was violating the afdi's first amendment rights. the ads have been posted in new york city subway stations since last month. five minutes after the hour, and the nationals playoff run off to a great start. they won the opening game of the national league division series, and the game's big hero started the game on the bench. >> and a line drive to right field. coming on in, it's a base hit. beltran throwing on in, but two runs score. and moving on the throw to the plate is tyler moore. >> tyler moore's pinch-hit in the eighth inning scored the tying and winning runs, and the nats beat the world series

champion st. louis cardinals 3-2. moore admits he was a little nervous when he was at bat. >> i'm coming off the bench in front of 50,000 people, so it's crazy. i've been in that position before, and i was able to calm myself down and just kind of put the barrel on it. >> you did good. the nationals will look to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series this afternoon in st. louis. first pitch scheduled for just after 4:30. orioles fans not celebrating this morning. the o's fell to the yankees last night in the first game of the american league division series. game was tied at 2 in the ninth when the yankees scored six runs. final score was 8-2. the game started more than 2 1/2 hours late because of rain. this was the first postseason game played in baltimore in 15 years. this morning the redskins latest loss may not be fans' biggest concern. their attention is on quarterback robert griffin iii's health. he suffered a mild concussion in the team's 24-17 loss to the falcons yesterday. rg3 was hurt on this play in the

third quarter. the falcons sean weatherspoon decked him. griffin left the game and never came back. head coach mike shanahan says rg3 was so woozy after the hit he didn't know the score or what quarter it was. >> at that time, he wasn't really sure what the score was, and we knew he had a mild concussion, at least according to the doctors. feels good right now, a lot better right now. but that was the situation, why he didn't go back into the game. >> fellow rookie kirk cousins finished the game at quarterback. team doctors will reexamine griffin today. he has to clear the nfl's concussion protocol before he can practice or play gep. this is something that we've been worried about all season so far. >> something we didn't want to see happen. still he's going to learn sometimes you just let the play go and keep playing the game. hopefully, he'll recover and be back out there next week. it is 5:07. jerry sandusky's attorney

cameras were rolling inside a california liquor store when a truck came crashing through the wall. the owner of the store was behind the register helping customers when, check it out, the out of control pickup truck just crashed into the store front, shattering the glass and the liquor bottles. the driver actually backed up and then took off. the customer called the owner, who was pinned between the cigarettes and the counter. >> next thing i knew, i'm flying backwards, and the truck's in the store. >> the store owner is expected to make a full recovery. the driver was later arrested at his house. he's charged with dui and felony hit and run. >> 16 after the hour now. we should be showing you two

beautiful weddings this morning. instead, an all out brawl between two wedding parties. the end with one man dead, several people hurt, and at least one man under arrest and the whole thing caught on video. this morning a sheraton hotel guest shot this video on his cell phone and posted it on youtube. you can see several officers clashing with one of the wedding guests. police say at least 75, maybe 100 people got into a fight by the time the police got there. >> they just started pumpling each other and hitting each other. the police came in and started clubbing people. >> the uncle of one of the brides suffered a heart attack and died there. the sheraton hotel released a statement offering condolences and said they're cooperating with police. venezuelan president hugo chavez was elected to a third

term in office. the electoral council auns nnou the narrow victory after a record turnout. chavez was accused of using the oil proceeds in the country to his advantage. we're learning more about what led to the deadly the shooing of a border patrol agent near the mexican border. nicholas ivie died last tuesday in arizona. the head of the border patrol union said it was a case of friendly fire. ivie shot at two armed agents he thought were smugglers. he was killed when those two agents rurpd fire. ivie will be laid to rest today. the names of 80 firefighters who died last year and 5 who died in last past were added to the memorial on the grounds of the national fire academy in

emitsburg, maryland. family and friends came together to honor their loved ones, including the family of mark falkenheim in baltimore county. >> we've seen it from other states for mark's funeral, but to come together as a nation, it's incredible to come together as one family. >> this annual event is a sign of respect for the families. this morning the pharmacy at the center of a deadly meningitis outbreak is voluntarily recalling all of its products. the new england compounding center says the move is just a precaution and says there is no indication any of the products were contaminated. the centers for disease control report 91 cases of fungal meningitis in nine states connected to the massachusetts health facility. seven people have died, including one person in maryland and another person in virginia. they were all treated with contaminated steroids for back pain. in colorado, almost 1,000 people spent the weekend

searching for a missing 10-year-old girl. jessica ridgeway was reported missing on friday after she didn't show up for her school in denver. yesterday searchers found her backpack about six miles from her home. police are hoping someone in the area may have seen her and will come forward with information. tomorrow former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky will be sentenced. last month a jury convicted him of molesting boys he met through his charity for at risk children. sandusky's lawyer said he made bad decisions, but he is not guilty of the charges. >> jerry has always said he made bad judgment in all the things that got him accused. having showers with kids, obviously he realized that was not the thing to do. but he still maintains his innocence. >> the 68-year-old sandusky could receive life in prison.

iphone fever in this country may be triggering a major labor dispute in china. an overseas labor watchdog says thousands of workers at a plant that builds the new iphone 5 went on strike last night. they were apparently angry apple strengthened inspections of the new smart phone, and they were made they had to work on a national holiday. foxconn technology group denies the report. they said there were two disputes between line workers and quality assurance personnel. oktoberfest wrapped up yesterday in munich, germany. organizers say about 6.4 million people partied at this year's event. that's 500,000 people fewer than last year. this was the 179th annual oktoberfest, which will be followed by november fest, december fest, january fest. >> rumor has it meteorologist veronica johnson went looking

on storm team 4 radar, we are dry. these little showers not reaching the ground. down here south of petersburg, a few sprinkles here. the major part of the rains now in southern areas of west virginia and coming out of tennessee, that's what will reach us by 11:00 a.m. to lunch time. i'm not expecting anything terribly heavy to move through our area. here we are, area of high pressure coming up through the south. wet through the afternoon hours and overnight. in fact, still some morning showers left in the area around as well. today's high 56 degrees with rain developing around lunchtime and continuing through the evening rush. likely that we're going to be wet and certainly chilly. tomorrow 63 your high temperature with a little bit of sunshine coming our way for the afternoon. 72 on wednesday and our warmest day out of the work week. at least we've got something to look forward to midweek. i'll be back in about ten minutes. right now let's hit first 4

morning. good morning, everyone. he'll be at virginia military institute, his ninth address since summer before last on foreign policy. he expects to draw differences -- show differences, draw a contrast between himself and president obama on a number of issues. key points, including hot spots is syria, libya, egypt. he's expected to talk about having a strong military without cuts to defense, and israel being a strong ally of the united states. specifically on libya, he will say that al qaeda was behind the deaths of our ambassador and three others there, that it was the deliberate work of terrorists -- that's a quote from the advance of his speech -- not the video that's been talked about so much and that it was the same group that attacked on 9/11. on syria, he will urge america to arm the rebels who may end up being in a position of authority there. and in egypt, he will suggest tying the $1 billion in aid we give that country to them upholding the peace treaty with

on its way into space. spacex launched its unmanned falcon rocket from cape canaveral in florida. it's headed to the international space station with 1,000 pounds of cargo. you might remember a similar launch back in may although that was more of a test than a tli delivery mission. spacex's falcon will stay for three weeks before they return to earth. i read they had ice cream on board this time. it's a chocolate vanilla swirl. >> spacex, in three years, they hope to send people out there. pretty cool. >> and there will be ice cream waiting for us when we get there. around these parts, it definitely feels like the fall. cold weather has hit our region. >> storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson in for tom this morning. >> late fall weather this morning. layer up heading out. look at these numbers. mt. aerie at 36. 45 in d.c. clarendon coming in at 41 degrees. that's our hometown forecast. will ride out of the low 40s. notice the clouds moving in.

moments ago. john b. gurden and yamanaka were just warded the nobel prize for medicine. the cells that can become pluripotent. now along with the prestigious award, the winners will also receive a monetary prize. this year the nobel foundation is feeling the effects of the world economy, lowering the payout by 20% to $1.2 million. i'm live at the news desk, tony tull, news 4. 5:47 now. a developing story in bladensburg, maryland. this morning a man is recovering after being shot by police. officers were called to 55th avenue around 7:00 last night to talk to a woman who reported being threatened. shortly after police got to the scene there, an officer says a man with a knife approached him

outside. >> the officer confronted the suspect, gave him several verbal commands, and ordered him to drop the knivment the suspect refused to comply with those orders and, in fact, advanced on the officer. the officer, fearing for his life, fired his issued firearm and struck the suspect. >> police say the suspect suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. police are trying to figure out who killed a man and left him on the doorstep of a home in northern virginia. police were called to the 6400 block of broadmoor street in fairfax county early sunday morning. they found the body of 34-year-old mark earl ives outside a home there. he had trauma to his body. and sources tell news 4 the victim appeared to have a wound to his head. >> our earlier investigation, we believe the suspect in this case is actually an acquaintance of our victim. >> police do not believe there is any threat to the community.

this morning a happy ending to the search for murray, a dog missing since an attack last week in northeast. the washington humane society found murray yesterday. on friday murray's owner was jogging with the dog when she was confronted by another jogger. she says the man grabbed murray's leash, but he slipped out of his collar and disappeared. the man then allegedly grabbed her and sexually assaulted her. she screamed for help, and the man ran off. murray has a broken leg, but is expected to be just fine. the coast guard is searching for two maryland men who vanished while boating. the two brothers left ocean city, maryland, heading to chincoteague, virginia. they were expected to arrive saturday night. the wife of one of those men called the coast guard when her husband didn't show up. today controversial ads that support israel will begin appearing in metro stations and on some metro buses. those ads must be in place by

among the panelists. a cancer survivor had to undergo an embarrassing pat down through security. margaret dietrich was in kansas city. she went through the body scanner and was pulled for a pat down. she has silicone breast implants and recent scar tissue from surgery. she explained that to the tsa agent, and what happened next left her mortgaifiegagifiemorti. >> i'm standing here with my arms in the air and he is grabbing my chest. and everyone is looking at me wondering what is wrong with my chest? >> tsa said it's necessary to do a patdown when something with the body scan is out of the ordinary. today is a federal holiday in observance of columbus day. several local and state agencies are closed as well as most

orange line is single tracking between stadium armory and cheverly. aaron? >> thank you, mike. 5:54. breaking news in silver spring. police on the scene of a reported shooting on georgia avenue and the beltway. news 4's megan mcgrath is there. megan, what do we know? >> reporter: it's very early in the investigation. i'll step out of the way so you can see the crime scene. obviously, still very active at this point. what we're getting from police is they received a call about an individual who was making threats, saying that he was going to perhaps hurt himself, perhaps hurt others. they tracked this individual down to the area of his girlfriend's home, and that's where there was some sort of encounter wen this man and police. they believed him to be armed, potentially dangerous. there was some sort of confrontation, and we're told that police opened fire, striking this man. it's our understanding from here on the scene that he was transported to the hospital and he is still alive. really no further detail at this point.
